DIAMOND AND GEMSTONE GRADING

All diamonds and gemstones carried by Grace Marié are graded and certified from an independent gemology lab. Every stone is individually graded by trained gemologists who use specalised equipment.
The key characteristics that are assessed are colour, cut, clarity and carat.

COLOUR

Colour refers to the natural colour or lack of colour of a diamond based on the GIA’s D-Z grading scale, D being a colorless diamond and Z being yellow. This Industry leading scale is the most accepted system to evaluate the presence of colour or lack of colour within a diamond.

At Grace Marie, we only source colourless (DEF) and near colourless (G-J) diamonds and gemstones for our ready to wear pieces which guarentee the highest possible quality of each piece we curate.

CLARITY

WHAT IS CLARITY?

The clarity grade of a diamond is a measure of the amount and size of the imperfections which can appear in a diamond. Gemologists use 10x magnification to assess the diamond for any internal or surface characteristics and assign a clarity grade accordingly.

Diamond with the smallest amount of imperfections are given the highest clarity grades.

GRADING

Independent, experienced gemologists are able to classify and identify the clarity of a diamond by using 10x magnification. The industry leading scale used by GIA measure diamonds on a scale from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included).

IMPORTANCE OF CLARITY

Similar to the other key characteristics, the clarity in which you choose for your diamond is a matter of personal preference. Every diamond is unique just as every engagement piece is unique. The shape and size of your diamond will impact how visible the inclusions will be to the naked eye. When selecting your desired stone our team will be there to assist you through the entire process answering any questions you may have.

CUT

CUT.PNG

Not to be mistaken for shape, cut refers to how skillfully the diamond has been cut and the quality of proportions, symmetry and polish.

The better a diamond has been cut, the greater the diamond’s ability to reflect and refract light. The cut affects how light passes through your stone and whether a diamond can achieve it’s best possible brilliance, fire and scintillation.

BRILLIANCE

Brilliance is the foundation of a diamonds brightness or sparkle and refers to the white light flashes or return of light through the table or top of the diamond creating the white sparkle.

FIRE

Also known as dispersion, fire is the transformation of light that enters through the top of the diamond into a rainbow of colours. After the light enters through the crown, it bounces off the mirror-like facets and exits back through the top in flashes of colour.

SCINTILLATION

Scintillation is the sparkle or flashes or light a diamond emits while in movement. In order to view the sparkling on the diamonds surface the diamond or the viewer need to be in motion.

CARAT WEIGHT

Carat (ct) is a unit of measurement exclusively used for gems and diamonds referring to how much the stone weighs. As various diamonds and gems can vary in density, the size measurements will differ. Depending on the shape and type of gemstone or diamond, the difference in carat weight will be apparent as it increases. As the carat increases, so does the price.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARAT AND DIAMOND SIZE

Carat simply refers to how much a diamonds weighs, whereas size is about its dimensions. Since carat is a unit of weight, not all diamonds of equal carat weight will appear to be the same size due to their differing measurements.
