WHAT IS A MOISSANITE?

In recent times, modern science has allowed us to develop a gemstone that rivals the fire, brilliance and quality of any other stone. This gemstone is known as a Moissanite, the preferred diamond alternative.

A Moissanite is an extremely rare, naturally occurring mineral composed of silicon carbide (SiC). First discovered on a meteor by a French Scientist named Henri Moissan, the crystals were mistaken for diamonds. Due to their rarity in nature, naturally occurring moissanites are scarce and majority of the moissanites today are created in laboratories all over the world.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES

It is universally agreed that the most important characteristics of any gem stone are its beauty, durability and longevity. Moissanite tick all the boxes in relation to these characteristics, whilst having their own physical properties that make them unlike an other gemstone being unparalleled, brilliance, fire and lustre.

All three components relate to the overall ‘sparkle’ of the stone. Brilliance refers to the refractive index of the stone, which is the stones ability to capture and reflect light. Moissanite have a refractive index of 2.65 -2.69, the highest of any other jewel, the closest comparison being a diamond which has a score of 2.42.

The Fire of the stone relates to how the stone disperses light into the rainbow spectrum. Fire is achieved from the physical components of the stone, along with the way it is cut and faceted. A Moissanite has 2.5x the fire of a diamond, meaning that it has more delightful rainbow effect when reflecting light.

Finally the lustre or otherwise known as ‘shine’ of the stone refers to the flashes of light reflected back at you when exposing the stone to light. Moissanite has a lustre rating of 20.4% in comparison to a diamonds rating of 17.2%.

VALUE & AFFORDABILITY

Making the decision to propose to your loved one is a choice fueled by love and passion. It is a decision that often bears a financial pressure that can see you feeling overwhelmed and cautious in purchasing the best quality ring within your budget. Moissanite has disrupted the diamond industry by providing consumers with a product that not only replicates a diamonds unique qualities, but exceeds them.

Moissanite engagement rings are the ultimate value for money choice for consumers looking for a beautiful ring, at a portion of the cost when compared to the traditional natural diamond ring. To put it simply, a round solitaire style 18k yellow gold ring, with a colorless (DEF) 2ct diamond, would cost anywhere upward of $30,000 AUD through local jewellery stores, or even online jewellers.

The same style ring, with an 8mm Moissanite stone (2ct equivalent) when shopping through us at Grace Marié will cost you only $3400 AUD. That is a price difference of over $26,000 AUD, so the question that you should be asking yourself is not why Moissanite, it is why not!

LIMITED LIFETIME

WARRANTY

The beauty in Moissanite is in its durability and life time guarantee, making it a perfect stone for any engagement ring, or piece of jewellery that is worn on a daily basis.

All gemstones measure durability using ‘Mohs Scale of Hardness’ which assesses a stones toughness and resistance to surface scratching. On the ‘Mohs Scale’ a Moissanite measures a 9.25 which is second in hardness to a diamond being a 10 due to it being the hardest known mineral on earth. Its unique physical properties allow Moissanite to be exposed to all conditions including cleaning and repair that could potentially damage other stones.

All Moissanite stones supplied by us are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity which verifies that what you are receiving is an authentic, lab tested and certified Moissanite. In working with labs and suppliers around the world sourcing only the highest quality Moissanite here at Grace Marie we have developed our own signature Moissanite that we have branded our ‘Celestial Moissanite’.

MOISSANITE FAQ’S

Can you tell the difference between a diamond and a moissanite?

To the untrained eye, it is extremely difficult to differentiate a moissanite from a diamond.

Are moissanites as durable as a diamond?

Diamonds are the hardest known mineral on earth measuring a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness (a measure of a minerals durability from 1-10). Moissanites measure a very close second with a score of 9.25 – 9.50 making them also the perfect choice for everyday wear as the stone will not scratch, chip or cloud.

Do moissanite rings hold their value?

Neither a Moissanite nor a diamond is likely to increase in value. Both generally resell at a substantial loss-especially if they’re resold soon after being purchased. Because Moissanite is much less expensive, the total risk of loss is often lower than it is with a more expensive diamond.

Does a moissanite lose its sparkle over time?

No! Your moissanite will never lose its sparkle, scratch, chip or cloud! All our Celestial Moissanies come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Do moissanites come in all shapes and sizes?

Yes! At Grace Marié we can source any custom requests for particular shapes and sizes.

Is moissanite an ethical choice?

Moissanites require absolutly no mining to produce meaning they do not take from earths natural elements. Their origins and supply chain are completely traceable making them an ethical choice.
